Electric cars are shaping the future of driving and there has never been a more exciting time to join the EV revolution!
With a rapidly expanding UK charging network and a growing choice of modern, efficient EV models, drivers have more flexibility than ever when it comes to going electric.
The EV market can still feel like a bit of a minefield, especially if you’re new to the technology. There are lots of questions about the best models, charging options and what day-to-day ownership really looks like.
Below, we’ve pulled together some key information, with support from the Energy Saving Trust website. To explore further, take a look at our Electric Vehicles: Useful links and resources page.
Why go electric?
Lower Costs
EVs can be a smart investment for drivers looking for a cheaper, more efficient and reliable way to get around. As with petrol or diesel cars, prices vary depending on make, model and features but the choice is now bigger than ever, from affordable city cars to premium long-range options.
Home charging can cost less per mile than petrol or diesel, especially on a suitable off-peak tariff. Costs depend on your tariff and where you charge. Explore Carwow’s electric-car reviews and comparisons to compare models and their features.
Electric motoring can offer long-term savings, but the total cost depends on the purchase or lease price, electricity tariff, charging location, mileage and tax. Electric vehicles are already subject to Vehicle Excise Duty. The announced mileage-based electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) charge is planned for April 2028; it is not a current charge.
Cheaper to Maintain
Although the upfront price of an EV may be similar to a traditional vehicle, the ongoing running costs are usually lower.
Fully electric cars have fewer moving parts in their powertrain than combustion-engine cars. They still need servicing to the manufacturer’s schedule, and maintenance needs and costs vary by model.
Better for the Environment
Fully electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions. Their whole-life environmental impact also depends on battery manufacture, electricity generation and how the vehicle is used. Plug-in hybrids produce no tailpipe emissions while driving fully on electric power; keeping them charged can increase the proportion of journeys made in electric mode.
A More Enjoyable Driving Experience
Electric cars can offer quiet driving and responsive acceleration. Performance, handling and comfort vary by model.
Choose a vehicle suited to your needs and drive safely within the speed limits and road rules.
